Using the “Gecko” climbing skin from MP Sports for the first time and attaching it prior to a climb
- Unroll the skin and peel off the protective film. This film can now be disposed of.
- Dry the ski base thoroughly before attaching the skin.
- Centre the bail at the front of the ski tip and fix the skin in place by pulling lightly downwards. This ensures that the individual bail will fit any ski tip and cannot slip out of position.
- Tighten the skin on the ski from top to bottom, ensuring there are no bubbles or creases, and secure it in place using the tail clip (blue bail).
- Smooth down the skin on the ski by hand, and away you go!
When climbing
If any snow crystals have collected on the gripping surface when you come to put the skin back on, you can wipe them off with your gloves or carefully pull the silicone side off over the edge of your ski.
After climbing
- Open the tail system and keep it open.
- Starting at the back, pull the skin off the ski towards the front.
- Place the two gripping surfaces together or roll them up.
Storage/Care/Tips
- Skins should be dried at room temperature and then put back into the drawstring bag.
- Store the skins somewhere cool (e.g. a cellar or basement) in the summer.
- Used ski touring skins can be disposed of as general waste.
- If small pieces of the coating come off, this will not impair the functionality of your skin in any way.
- If you are experiencing poor grip, clean the suction surface with Gecko Silicone Cleaning Spray and allow your skin to dry. You can also use a compressed-air gun for cleaning.
Instructions for self-cutting
These instructions only apply to skins that need to be cut to size. Please follow the individual steps carefully to avoid damaging your skin or skis.
- Unroll the skin and peel off the protective film. This film can now be disposed of.
- Dry the ski base thoroughly before attaching the skin.
- Centre the bail at the front of the ski tip and fix the skin in place by pulling lightly downwards so that it runs evenly along the middle of the ski.
- Tighten the skin on the ski from top to bottom, ensuring there are no bubbles or creases.
- To adjust the length, trim the skin at the back of the ski so that it is around 10 cm shorter than the ski.
- The section (mohair) that you have cut off at the back can be used as a gauge for trimming the tail system to size.
- Place this gauge on the cut-off end of the skin and use scissors to cut along your gauge. Then punch out the three holes already shown on the gauge.
- Fix the tail system (green rubber strap) in place on the silicone side (not the mohair side) and apply three studs to it.
- Tip for studding: if you do not have a studding machine, use a pipe wrench to press the studs together as tightly as possible, and then you can use a hammer to flatten them completely.
- Finally, thread the rear Gecko bail into the now-mounted strap and fix it in place lengthwise in such a way that the skin is not under any great tension when you click the bail on to the tail of your ski. The bail should be more or less in the middle of the green strap.
- You can now use your Gecko knife to cut the skin to size on both sides. See the video on our website (Support – Videos – Cutting the Gecko skin to size and mounting the tail system)
- Please read Section D of the instructions for use for information on caring for and storing your Gecko skins.
